About Us

Karen Parelli Hagen enjoys a reputation as a recognized expert in natural horsemanship and especially enjoys coaching, teaching, and training through Defining Horsemanship.  Karen grew up in the heart of the historical 'California Vaquero' country of Livermore, California.

Karen's accomplishments include a Bachelor of Science Degree from California State University Fresno in Animal Science.  She was instrumental in starting several organizations including the American Mule Association, cutting clubs, and team penning groups.  She has shown in three day events at Ram Tap and Pebble Beach, cutting, reining, and working cow horse, as well as participating in rodeos.  Karen was the Colt Starting Competition judge for the Rowell Ranch Cowboy Gathering for four years.  She was the co-founder of Parelli Natural Horsemanship Corporation during the time she was married to Pat Parelli.

In her youth, Karen was always surrounded by livestock and many other animals, raising cattle, sheep, and McNabb stockdogs.  She served as secretary/treasurer of the Calaveras County Cattlemen's Association for four years.

Karen has a daughter, Marlene, and son, Caton, as well as two lovely granddaughters, Angelina and Ellora.

Jim Hagen:  Kirkwood Stables was founded, developed, and operated for over twenty years by Jim Hagen and then with his wife, Karen Hagen.  Jim holds the U.S.F.S. Special Use Permit for the Mokelumne Wilderness in the El Dorado National Forest.

Jim's experience with horses in Kirkwood has been enhanced by his knowledge of the high Sierras and his mountain expertise.  Jim has been employed by Kirkwood Ski Resort for over twenty-five years in ski patrol, grooming, managerial positions, as well as snow removal.  Kirkwood Stables now has a new name...Kirkwood Sierra Oufitters, and operates seasonally every summer (mid-June through mid-October) with guided trail rides and pack trips providing rich wilderness experiences for riders, and attracts naturalists, photographers, hikers, astronomers, school groups, families, and a variety of organizations.  Customers and Defining Horsemanship clients experience Mountain Horsemanship Camps with Jim as their knowledgeable guide throughout the summer season with Kirkwood Sierra Outfitters.

Jim is also extremely busy with ongoing projects and building up the JbarK Ranch facilities used for Jim and Karen's work in Defining Horsemanship, teaching, coaching, and horse training, along with all the trimming and shoeing of the horses.  Jim also does day work for other ranches in the area!  Jim is a past president of the Calaveras County Cattlemen's Association and is now serving on the Board of Directors.
